I just tweeted that I am having a bit of an odd moment while scrolling through my news feed. It’s because half of updates talk about smart stuff. Smart cities, smart devices, smart bikes, smart computing, etc. And the half talk about people being stupid. And it makes me think about how the meaning of smart has become, in Millennial parlance, attached more to things and less to people. But it also makes me think about how we’re spending a lot of time trying to figure out how to make things smart but less and less time trying to understand what it means for humans to be smart and how we can achieve that. It seems like this is the wrong order to be doing it in.
